Hello Bulldog Family,
Congratulations on completing the first week of Comprehensive Distance Learning. I appreciate the parents and community members that are showing us understanding and grace as we all learn and grow through this process. All of our staff members are working extremely hard to provide the best education possible following the parameters set by our state education department and the CDC. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to your teacher or myself if you need support.
Thank you for taking the time to read through the important information, updates, and clarification below.
Meals
Breakfast and Lunch meals are being provided free to ALL students. Buses are delivering meals to bus stops throughout our neighborhood attendance area. Information about the bus stop nearest you can be found on the MyBus app, going to the HSD website under the transportation tab, or calling the transportation department at (503) 844-1123. Students do NOT need to be present to receive a meal. If the scheduled delivery is during a live teaching time, a family member, sibling, or another student can pick up the meal.
Attendance
Our attendance program has been adjusted to comply with the new CDL schedule. Thank you again to those of you that are being patient as we get the systems correct. Calls will go out each day at 5 pm. If your child has not participated in school before 5 pm, they can still log in and complete tasks and attendance will be updated the following morning.
Participating in CDL
We realize that during this time supporting children in CDL can be difficult. Many of us are balancing serving the Butternut Creek community and supporting our own children in CDL as well. We can empathize with you! The schedule and service model that is being provided by the Hillsboro School District is in response to criteria and regulations put into place by the Oregon Department of Education as well as the overwhelming response of parents in our community that asked for much more live teaching time in the many surveys we sent out last Spring.
There are multiple ways to participate in CDL if the schedule is not feasible for your family.
Participating in 1 or more of the following is considered positive attendance and participation in CDL:
- Attend 1 or more of the daily live lessons by your teacher(s).
- Complete the assignments/questions posted in Google Classroom daily.
- Attend live office hours with your teacher(s).
- Communicate with your teacher(s) about how you can complete assignments or tasks.
If you are still experiencing difficulty participating by doing 1 or more of the above mentioned options, please reach out to your teacher to discuss options.
Live Class Sessions
We are very appreciative of all the parent and caregiver support being provided to especially our youngest students during Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL). Please remember, however, that adults should not ask questions or otherwise participate during students’ synchronous classes. It is our expectation that office hours, e-mail, and Remind are the ways parents can interface with the teachers. Keeping the learning time focused on teacher and student interactions will be extremely helpful. Thank you so much for understanding and assisting us in making CDL a positive and productive experience for our students and staff.
Technology Help
You or your student may be experiencing technology difficulties. If you have a chromebook from the school and it is not working (key on keyboard is broken, won’t charge, screen broken, etc) please contact your teacher right away so we can exchange the device for you at Butternut Creek. If the problem is network based (can’t log in, certain programs won’t run, etc) there are a couple of different ways to get support. First contact your teacher and see if they can troubleshoot with you. If not, they will refer you to our district technology help. Students or parents can call or text 503-886-8956 for technical assistance, selecting English or Spanish when prompted. You may also email techhelp@hsd.k12.or.us.
Online Verification
Completing the Online Verification process is vital to ensuring we have your correct contact information and the permissions needed to keep your student connected to virtual learning. You must have a ParentVUE account to complete online verification. Contact your child’s school if you do not have an active ParentVUE account. Later this month, we will begin sending weekly emails and phone calls to families reminding them to complete this process. One task within the verification process is providing permission for your student(s) to access the Google suite of education applications. If we do not receive permission for your student(s), their access will be turned off at the end of the semester.
Be well,
Dani Johnson
