Bond Update: Groner Gym
October 18, 2021 - Groner K-8’s existing gym and underlying cafeteria have been closed as a safety precaution after the summer’s bond construction uncovered deficiencies in the 70-year-old building’s gym roof trusses. Scaffolding has been erected to provide temporary support while the structural design, engineering, and repairs are underway.
The District also rented a temporary gym so that students would have a covered space for PE and activities while the repairs take place. The temporary gym is currently being erected at the back of the school. Remaining work on this structure includes application of fine base gravel to underlie the synthetic turf, which is expected to be installed before the end of October, barring any delivery delays. Students will be able to use the temporary gym once this is done.
Steel beams are currently being designed for the existing gym and are expected to be manufactured and delivered in two to three weeks. These will be installed under the existing roof trusses and provide structural stability, adding to the seismic upgrades that were part of Groner’s original bond project. With this construction, the gym will join the rest of the school building in meeting current “safe exit” seismic standards.
Watch for upcoming news of a beam signing ceremony open to the community - be part of a new future for the rejuvenated Groner building!
