Featured Students: Ground Up Baristas
May 9, 2022 - Ground Up is a student-run coffee shop that opened in the fall of 2018 in partnership with First Tech Credit Union’s Hillsboro Corporate Office, which is just across the street from the District Administration Center (AC).
Students enrolled in the program can earn a half-credit in Career and College Development on school days, and get paid for work they complete on non-school days. In addition, students can also earn a $500 college scholarship for each semester they complete, paid for out of the tips received from customers!
Unfortunately, COVID closed down the coffee shop at First Tech for the past two years. But thanks to the creative thinking of Sheila Vega, student support and pathway specialist, and Cat Ehrenfelt, assistant to the executive directors of middle and high schools, unspent Measure 98 (High School Success Fund) was utilized to purchase a training station that was installed in the AC break room in the fall and winter of this school year.
Students were able to forecast for the Ground Up Marketing Lab experience for second semester, utilizing the AC training station. Those of us who work in the AC have been delighted to get to know our current baristas: Glencoe sophomores Samantha Parra and Susana Roman Marquez; and Liberty senior Karina Garcia Campuzano. They are here in the afternoons on “B” days, meaning some weeks they are here on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and other weeks they are here on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They have also made special appearances for Board work sessions and large meetings.
First Tech will be reopening its coffee shop this summer, so the students will be able to complete paid internships there. The week of June 27 they will clean all of the equipment, restock, and learn how to make iced beverages and smoothies - things that aren’t available at the training station. They will then open for business for First Tech staff after the Independence Day holiday.
Sheila hopes to have the coffee shop and training station operational on a full-time basis this fall, for both students enrolled in the Marketing Lab and for our Early College and Community Transition Students who may have more flexibility in their schedules.
Many thanks to all of the partners who made this program possible: Longbottom Coffee and Tea, First Tech Credit Union, the Hillsboro Schools Foundation, and more!Check out the Ground Up website for their current menu, and their Instagram page for pictures!
Estudiantes destacados: Ground Up Baristas
